Sun April 4, 2010

I had bloody diarrhea with what looked like coffee grinds in the stool. I wasn't worried. I have ulcerative colitis and occasionally found blood in my stool.

Wed April 7, 2010

Started vomiting blood. I was weak. I called 911.

I spent four days in the hospital getting poked and prodded and got three units of blood and a biopsy of something in my stomach.

Mon May 3, 2010

Testing. Biopsy results from last month came back. Stomach cancer.

Thu May 6, 2010

Testing (Endoscopic ultrasound).

Tue May 11, 2010

Met with the surgeon.

Mon May 17, 2010

Surgery. (Partial gastrectomy with anastomosis to jejunum) Spent eight days in the hospital. Developed minor case of pneumonia. I'm told they had some good food. I wouldn't know.

Tumor was diffuse adenocarcinoma staged as T1bN1 and was found in two of thirty-nine lymph nodes biopsied. Infected nodes were adjacent to the tumor.

Wed June 9, 2010

Check up with surgeon. Went well.

By this time I was eating fine - just no caramel.

Fri June 18, 2010

Surgeon installed port for chemotherapy.

Mon June 28, 2010

Started Chemotherapy.

Tue June 29, 2010

Day two.

Wed June 30, 2010

Day three of first treatment. Made a cast for radiation and got my tattoos.

Thu July 1, 2010

Day four. Nauseous in the evening.

Fri July 2, 2010

Day five of my first treatment. Still nauseous. Doctor gave my a couple of scripts for the nausea.

Thu July 8, 2010

I've been nauseous on and off since July 1.

Some friends from work stopped by and dropped off a care package.

Fri July 9, 2010

First day in a week I got through without any anti-nausea medicine.

Sent out some thank yous.

Sat Jul 10, 2010

Pretty good day. I didn't take any anti-nausea meds and only got sick after a Klondike Reeses. Not sure if it was the chocolate or the ice cream. A few more things I need to watch.

I actually just started this blog today. Back filled the data, mostly from records. Spent the day working on this site.

Sun Jul 11, 2010

I had a pretty good day spent working on my site.

Mon Jul 12, 2010

Had five cheese rigatoni for dinner tonight. Shouldn't have! Need to get up early for doctor tomorrow. Turning in early.

Tue Jul 13, 2010

Dr appointment went well. I'm thinking of putting in a few hours at work next week. Really tired today.

Fri Jul 16, 2010

The past three days I've been very tired, I haven't had the ambition to mess with the computer, just sitting in front of the tube.

Sat Jul 17, 2010

Feel alright, still a little tired but running low-grade fever around 100.5°F. Nurse said go to the E.R. I got a CBC and manual diff, 0.5L saline and dinner (actually good) all for the low low price of $100 and 4.5 hrs. Finally did that table and graphs for my blood-work. Up way too late.

Sun Jul 18, 2010

Pretty good day. I can't eat crab cakes though. Spent a lot of time working on my site. Going to give work a shot tomorrow.

Mon Jul 19, 2010

Felt okay and went to work, felt fine, no problems, drank the Ensure like the doctor told me and got sick as a dog. Didn't make the four hours planned. I'll try again tomorrow sans Ensure.

Tue Jul 20, 2010

Felt okay. Worked 4.5 hrs. Pretty exhausted. I might do it one more night to make up for the short day Monday, but I think four hrs. is better at this point. I might be able to get some actual work done tomorrow as I should be back in all the systems.

Wed Jul 21, 2010

Just tired today. Didn't go in to work.

Thu Jul 22, 2010

Still tired. Worked 3 hrs.

Fri Jul 23, 2010

Still tired. Diodn't go in to work. Ordered out but had to take anti-nausea meds.

Sat Jul 24, 2010

I actually did some hacking today. I can tolerate Red Bull. Got Rick up and running. Updated roots.cgi, circles.cgi and magicsquares-js.html.

Sun Jul 25, 2010

Pretty good day. Did some more programming for Rick. Ate well. Had half a garden salad from Wawa and had to take anti-nausea medicine to keep it down.

Mon Jul 26, 2010

Spent 7:45 AM to about 3:10 PM down FCCC. I might have caught 2 20 minute naps while waiting. Extremely tired today. Fell asleep around 5 PM and slept through my alarm at 6:30 PM and woke at 9:30 PM. Totally screwed up my sleep.

Tue Jul 27, 2010

Got back from FCCC around 11 AM. I was completely exhausted. Took couple hour nap at 12:30 and ended up going to bed at 9 PM. Took anti-nausea meds after dinner.

Fri Jul 30, 2010

Only had radiation today. Stomach is still a mess. Going to try to switch to BRAT (Bananna, Rice, Applesauce and Toast) diet for a while. Finally updated blog to allow for inputting yesterday automatically if I don't update until the morning. Spent a very small amount of time updating my local site to prevent file not found errors when loading pages. I added toc.png, prev.png, and next.png to a directory for the hp48 faq.

Sat Jul 31, 2010

Spent some time on the phone, watched some TV, tired. Stomach settling but still taking antinausea meds and sticking with BRAT diet with exception of poached eggs. Turning in at 8 PM tonight.

Sun Aug 1, 2010

Updated a machine, which consisted of answering a bunch of yes or no questions after 10 minutes research. Didn't go the way I'd planned. Too tired to loose sleep over it. I can eat eggs, otherwise BRAT. Turned in 8 PM after a few short naps.

Mon Aug 02, 2010

Radiation only today. Tried eating some beefaroni. Not ready for it. Yogurt disagrees with me as well. I've been waking up too early, getting up at 5 AM. I've been turning in a little after eight. Up until a little after nine tonight because I got sick to my stomach. Still tired all day.

Sat Aug 07, 2010

Spent the last few days in the hospital. Treatments flaired my ulcerative colitis. I broke out in hives when they transfused me. I took less than a full pint of packed red cells. They finally changed my meds after 30 years, I figured if it's not broke don't fix it, but it broke. The nausea broke after a day in the hospital and I cheated big time when I got home with fries and a Whopper, my eyes are bigger than my stomach, but I'm keeping it down, but it may be a few months before I can enjoy that without paying for it.

Mon Aug 09, 2010

Spent the last two days on the mac. I reinstalled fink from scratch since both fink and macports were borked. Linux is a much better development environment.

Had my first day back to radiation and a followup with my chemotherapist. She was pleased with my blood levels, hemoglobin is 9.4, still anemic, but very good for chemo. My stomach either still sucks, or sucks again as I had to rely on anti-nausea meds to keep down a turkey burger. I may stop in work this week to clean out my desk, but that's about it. The office moves October 1, 2010.

Fri Aug 13, 2010

The last few days have been busy. Saw chemotherapist on Tuesday, blood counts are acceptable for their purposes (not mine). I was told they would just tack the days of radiation I missed onto the end. Radiation Tuesday through Friday. Thursday I also saw my radiation oncologist, and went to work to clear my desk out before the move on October 1, 2010. Driving three miles is pushing my luck, my balance and reflexes are being affected by the anemia that I won't be shaking for awhile. Tired since Wednesday.

Mon Aug 16, 2010

Felt okay over the weekend, just tired. Woke at 4 AM Sunday and had 1.5 hr nap. Of course I only watched TV and ate. Woke 4 AM today. It will be a long day. Starting week 4 of radiation today at 10 AM. My weight is bad though - I'm down to 136 lbs. I don't know what to do about it, I'm eating, just not enough to make myself sick.

Tue Aug 17, 2010

Felt okay today, but took a long nap from 4:30 to 7:30, that will screw up my sleep tonight. I ate a bagle for breakfast, an almond crescant for lunch and a whopper for lunch and dinner (half at each meal) washed down by a generous portion of watermelon. I feel okay for the time being, but have to stay up until at least 10 PM tonight. I finished watching Wolverine and the X-Men Season 1 on PS3.

Fri Aug 20, 2010

I've been pretty much okay the last few days, just not sleeping well, so a little extra tired. Woke up at about 3:45 this morning. It is going to be a long day. TGIF.

Tue Aug 24, 2010

Weekend went well, felt okay and had more energy. Yesterday and today just plain tired after radiation. Started feeling nauseous again.

Wed Aug 25, 2010

Nausea better today, but tired.

Fri Aug 27, 2010

Tired but did not sleep well. Broken sleep after 2AM.

Wed Sep 01, 2010

Started chemo and radiation on Monday, been nauseous and unable to sleep through the night. The nurse practioner has been been trying to help but made things worse. It's my last day of radiation today and then I get three weeks off chemo. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that maybe I'll be able to eat right by the end of next week, or at least eat better.

Thu Sep 02, 2010

I finished radiation yesterday. Still tired and a little naseous. I;m not sleeping through the night.

Tue Sep 07, 2010

I've been nauseous the past several days. Hopefully today is a better day since I kept dinner down last night.

Thu Sep 16, 2010

Had a doctor appointment Monday, they gave me a script for adavan, finally something that works for the nausea. I can't drive on the med though so I use it sparingly. Besides my stomach is starting to settle on its own. I only used it Monday and I've been mostly okay since. I'm going to try no anti-nausea meds today and see if it goes okay.

Thu Sep 16, 2010

Gave up on the no meds by 4 PM.

Tue Sep 28, 2010

No anti-nausea meds since Sunday. Doing okay without. Maybe I'll be able to gain some weight back. Saw "Devil" and "Resident Evil: Afterlife" in the theatre yesterday. Started to get sick after second movie. Movies were both good but "Resident Evil" looks set for another movie, it left us hanging again.

Mon Oct 04, 2010

I started back to chemo today. Last week I actually felt good for week four after chemo. I was able to eat well. They are adding a steroid to the things I get before chemo to improve the acting of the anti-nausea medicines and I no longer need to worry about radiation, so hopefully this week will go well. I'll be happy when chemo is finished next month.

Wed Oct 06, 2010

Day 3 of this week for chemo. So far the only casualty has been my sleep. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Thu Oct 28, 2010

They let me out of the hospital on Sunday. My biggest problem is being tired after nigh two weeks in the hospital. They scheduled a nurse to come out a few times and supposedly physical therapy, though physical therapy has yet to contact me. The hospital did make me go home with a walker.

Sat Oct 30, 2010

Had Hagan Daaz Banana Split yesterday, not good for the stomach, ended up taking a nap and staying up late. Physical therapy didn't call like they were supposed to, to make an appointment. Planning on picking up my new specs today.

Wed Nov 17, 2010

Last Friday they gave me an infusion pump instead of direct infusion for the 5-FU. The pump infuses the 5-fluorouricil over a 46 hour period and supposedly reduces the severity of the side-effects. Had the empty pump removed Sunday. So far, so good. I've had minimal stomach distress and feel basically healthy. While I'm still taking anti-nausea medication I'm able to eat pretty well. Hopefully, no more doctors until I get the infusion pump Black Friday. Then I'll have December to recover from all this and return to work in January.

Fri Nov 26, 2010

I went to my sister's home for Thanksgiving. It was the first time I'd seen the children since, I guess, March. They had gotten bigger, the youngest was talking more and the oldest was starting to read. We had a good dinner and later watched some television and played cards. I'm still taking anti-nausea pills twice a day and being very cautious what I eat, but I made out okay. I went to Fox Chase Cancer Center today for what was supposed to be my last treatment. Unfortunately, when my bloodwork came back, my neutrophils were low and the fellow that was working said no to the treatment. So I have to go back next week. Hopefully I'll have better luck then.

Sat Dec 04, 2010

I got the infusion pump again on Thursday and had it disconnected this morning. I'm finally done chemo. It'll still take some time to recover and there will be plenty of follow up appointments, but things are looking good.

Sun Dec 12, 2010

Too much sugar is still a problem. The threshold level is much lower than it used to be. I had four cookies, a piece of white chocolate and a chocolate covered cherry and felt awful for a good eight hours.

Thu Jan 13, 2011

I finally got back to work Tuesday, January 11, 2011. I'm only doing 5 hour days this week. I'm still having trouble staying up, but my gastric distress is mostly gone.

Sat Jan 22, 2011

I worked Wednesday through Friday this week. Ten hour days are still pretty tough. I'm beat.

Mon Jul 29, 2013

My health has been pretty good. My surgeon, oncologist and gastroentrologist have been pleased with my follow ups.

I eat pretty much as I please and I'm fine if I don't overindulge and I'm cautious with sweets.

Most of my time these days is spent watching television and/or playing Minions of Mirth when I'm not working.

Noticed a bug in my CGI pages last night and wasted a few hours tring to track it down. Turns out there is a bug in my Makefile. The header file wasn't updated on my server when I changed the navigational pane.

Wed Dec 25, 2013

Decided to play around with my blog some. Finally updated to show selected periods. Not heavily tested yet, but seems to work.

Merry Christmas!

Thu Dec 26, 2013

Got up early and modified myblog.pl again. Hopefully I did sufficient error checking.

Sun Jan 12, 2014

Added a page explaining my home page and a bit about me.

Thu Jan 01, 2015

Happy New Year!

I've been a little lazy with my blog of late, but it's a new year. I'll make a bit of an effort this year.

I've been back to playing Minions of Mirth Undead Wars mostly; however I've also been doing some random surfing. I came across "The Deathrow OpenVMS Cluster" and played around a bit. I still remembered a little DCL which surprised me a bit. Unfortunately it does not appear to available of late.

I've also been playing with VirtualBox. Yesterday I installed SkyOS and Solaris 11.2 to Virtual Machines. Both were installed sucessfully; however I didn't get sound working on SkyOS. I've already got VMs set up for React OS, WMLive, Debian Wheezy, Plan 9 and MS Windows 2000. The Windows 2000 actually does get use ocassionally since I work mostly from my Mac Mini. I might try to get familiar with Solaris using the VM.

I've also been entertaining myself with OSFirstTimer on Youtube.

Sat Jan 10, 2015

Visited my sister for cards. Had a rather unpleasant trip over a curb. I hit my knee and my head. It was a little bloody.

Spent about six hours in the Frankford Aria Emergency Room. I had my knee x-rayed and a head MRI. I had 12 stitches in my forehead and got a tetanus booster. Spent the night at my sister's home. She actually managed to get all the blood of my clothes.

Sun Jan 11, 2015

I had a relatively quiet day after I got home. Mostly just dozed. My knee actually hurts more than my head at this point.

Mon Jan 12, 2015

I still have a moderately nasty headache and my knee still reminds me of what happened.

The good doctor indicated I should make the appointment to get the stitches removed on next Monday.

Sat Jul 11, 2015

I've been playing around a little with Plan 9. The boot image boots without a problem in VirtualBox, but no joy with the network. I was curious about the pcc compiler. I had a small project and ended up putting it on a 20M FAT disk.

The compiler wasn't happy with my bad choices in variable names:

cat biorhythm.c | sed 's/\$/Z/' > bior.c

pcc bior.c cls.c help.c -o bior

Program compiles and mostly executes okay.

I'm not a fan of the shell, nor the editor. Without net access I probably won't spend much time playing with it.

Wed Sep 09, 2015

I did some messing aound with WindowMaker on Linux.

To set the background per workspace in WPrefs use:

wmsetbg -b SteelBlue4 -u -w `wsn` -e

cat /usr/bin/wsn
#!/usr/bin/env bash

xprop -root _NET_CURRENT_DESKTOP | awk '{print $3}'

Method may require you to restart Windowmaker.

Mon Feb 22, 2016

I've been spending more time playing "Dungeons & Dragons Online" than "Minions of Mirth" lately. I still don't have enough experience with it to add useful material to my site but expect that I will in time.

I updated my Perl script to let you select 2015 and 2016 on this blog. At some point I'll set it up to do that automatically.

Sat Jul 09, 2016

My fileserver, sabertooth, finally died due to disk failure. I figured I'd try a new distro.

I installed Manjaro Linux last weekend. I was looking for a rolling distro and I hadn't used any Arch based distros before. I had a usable system up and running in a day.

It might take me a little bit to get used to pacman and yaourt, but it looks like it may be worth the effort.

Mon Feb 13, 2017

I’ve been lazy lately and been watching dvds. I’m a fan of sci-fi/fantasy/horror.

I don’t really have much interest in reviews, but I was happy with seasons 4 and 5 of BBC’s Primeval.

I also found a collection from Echo Bridge, "Croc Godzilla of the Swamp" with five movies:

It was a total of 440 minutes on a single sided DVD. The quality of the video was poor. The effects on "Chupacabra Vs. the Alamo" and "Dire Wolf" were poor, but the latter wasn’t a bad movie.

The other three movies were great and are actually worth rewatching. I’d consider purchasing those three movies separately if they could be found with decent quality. I was surpised at the ending of "Grizzly Rage".

Sun Feb 19, 2017

I started playing around with The Bard’s Tale a little. I spent about two weeks working on a character editor in FreeDos using MIX’s Power C.

I’d forgotten much about editting text in a DOS environment. VIM was broken, and E did not have undo. I ended up relying on a few editors in Windows 3.1 for a small amount of the editting.

Power C’s Project files leave something to be desired, so I downloaded some BSD tools for DOS including make.

The program will probably compile with any ANSI C compiler; but, it was written for a 16 bit compiler. So, char is 1 byte, int is 2 bytes and long is 4 bytes.

I don't believe prototypes were standard yet when the compiler was released. It looked like the compiler did not warn if it thought a function returned an int value when your function returned a long value. Which leads to some really fun bug tracking. I found it by using 65535 as a test value and found it was returning (-1). Coding the function before it is called resolves the issue; otherwise it will silently cast the int to a long.

I learned to program using top down design, before GUIs were ubiquitous, and prefer to use stdin and stdout, so the end result isn't terribly pretty. However, it will accept an input stream. Since the menu system is simple, I added the ability for the editor to accept comments, instead of a command.

I wrote a few batch files for curing the team and traversing all the TPW files in a directory and ran into a few problems. Apparently the FOR construct is not supported in FreeeDOS, and either pipes are broken or MORE is broken and does not accept piped input.

My piping requirements were minimal and redirecting to a temporary file was adequate. I needed to use DRDOS to work around the missing FOR construct though. If you have DRDOS, MSDOS or IBMDOS you can avoid the call to the shell. (I was not running DRDOS as my shell.)

I got the imformation for the file format from The Adventurers’ Guild, which was largely adequate. The spell levels are stored beginning at byte 81: sorceror, conjurer, magician, wizard.

The source code is available at http://mcsuper5.freeshell.org/dl/dos/btce/btce1_1.zip

Mon Feb 20, 2017

Updated my main programming page to include a link for the Bard’s Tale Chacter Editor. I didn’t bother to list all the source files because of the number, but did provide links for the header files, TPW.H and CHAR.H.

In the DOS version of Bard’s Tale the TPW files are used for both parties and characters. The last byte of the 17 byte header indicates if the file is for a party or character.

Parties are simply 6 16 byte fields with null terminated strings for the names of the party members.

The character data is a little more complicated, and some of the skipped bytes might be used for something. I did some range checking, but don’t know the maximum values for all of the fields. I tried watching string input to avoid any buffer overruns. I might try to clean the code up in the future, but FreeDOS might be okay for games, but it not the greatest for setting up a development environment.

Fri Feb 24, 2017

I was thinking about a file selector for the character editor, but think I may skip it.

In DOS apparently BardsTale will list all files ending in TPW; however, you can only select files of the format: "%d.TPW", where %d is in the range 0 to 32767.

The heuristic is simple enough, but wasn’t used in other versions.

Sat Feb 25, 2017

I fixed a few bugs I had in BTCE version 1.2 and released 1.3.

Sat Oct 07, 2017

I'm sad to say that it looks like Minions of Mirth is gone. The Facebook and Twitter feeds both indicate it is offline indefinately.

My assumption is that this means permanently.

I can't see making a defunct game the centerpoint of my website. However, I spent thousands of hours playing the game and weeks designing the pages relevant to the game, and have no desire to remove the pages. I decided to move it off the main menu.

I did a short obituary for the game and have moved all links to that page. On my navigational pane it can be found under: Miscellaneous->R.I.P. Minions of Mirth. I did not move any of the pages, so if anyone was linking to my site the URLs should still be fine.

It should be noted that while the game is no longer live - the game is still playable in single player mode.

Sun Oct 22, 2017

I worked on magicSquare a bit. The text version will now indicate the number of moves. I also added some comments to the source, and added an uninstall target to the Makefile.

The text version will compile on Linux, Minix, NetBSD, OS X and Solaris. It should probably compile fine on any POSIX system.
